2022 Creek Day held recently in Newton

An annual tradition since 2009

BY BRANDY TEMPLETON

Kids and their families were all smiles while playing in a Newton creek on Friday.

Hosted by Newton resident Betty Kennedy, “Creek Day” has become an annual tradition that began in 2009.

It all started with just Kennedy and her granddaughter Riley Carr.

Kennedy was very depressed when Carr motivated her to get up and start living again.

Having a special play date and picnic at the creek near her house changed everything for the better. It was such a special time that it became a tradition.

Now, year after year , more people are included and it continues growing. The day has games, food, and plenty of water- filled fun.

This year’s Creek Day was extra special with the theme “Believe in Yourself.”

Class of 2022 graduates were honored and encouraged by Kennedy who wants to give them “roots and wings,” and help them when they face trials.

“The community is your roots and one day you will soar,” she said.

And community members came to show support and help them soar.

Newton City Councilmen Ed Sain and Roy Johnson took part in the festivities by helping prepare the food while Newton Police Chief Vidal Sipe played with the kids and gave safety advice.

Sheriff Don Brown and Newton Fire Chief Kevin Yoder also surprised the kids with deputies and firemen along with a truck. Kennedy was pleased. “A big takeaway was all the adult support that showed up and different service departments,” she said. “It was showing the kids that they matter and coming together for a common cause and the greater good.”
