Plane crashes in county

On Wednesday, May 31, at approximately 3:40 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to an airplane crash in Catawba County near Long Island Marina. A single-engine Sea Ray had just departed the Long Island Airport en route to the Statesville Airport. Shortly after takeoff, the plane experienced engine failure. The pilot was able to land on Lake Norman.

The pilot and a passenger received minor injuries and were treated by Catawba County EMS at the scene.

The NC Highway Patrol has secured the scene. The FAA will conduct an investigation.
